Objectives£ºThis study seeks what portion of schizophrenic patients take traditional herbal medicine while they are on maintenance outpatient treatment with psychotropic medication and what may contribute to their use.
Methods£ºA total of 117 schizophrenic and 168 other psychiatric outpatients at a psychiatric unit of a university hospital completed a questionnaire including social and demographic background, Center for Epidemiological Studies for Depression scale, and use of any traditional herbal medicine(Hanyak) during the past twelve months.
Results£ºSchizophrenic patients had significant lower rate of herbal medication use compared with other psychiatric patients. However, in a multivariate analysis type of religious affiliation such as Buddhism and no religion plus schizophrenic patients with high CES-D scores predicted use of herbal medicine. Married schizophrenic patients negatively predicted the use.
Conclusion£ºSchizophrenia with depressive symptoms may increase the herbal use and taken together with religion and marital status, clinicians should ask whether patients are using any herbal medication concurrently with psychotropic medication. Due to drug interaction and increased toxicity, unsupervised use of herbal medication can sometimes yield serious outcome.
